America Outdoors: Understory

How does our country’s diverse landscape shape our experience of the outdoors? That’s the central question behind the new PBS digital series, America Outdoors: Understory. Join host, Baratunde Thurston, as he explores the unexpected places and ways Americans encounter nature, and how their time outside is impacted by climate change, equity, access, outdoor culture and more.

I led the creative development and production of the first season of America Outdoors: Understory for PBS Digital Studios, shaping the series from early concept and story development through production and final delivery.

The series served as the digital companion to the national broadcast program America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS + STATS:

  • 128K+ YouTube views across the six-episode first season

  • Among the first original series to premiere on PBS’s flagship YouTube channel, extending the nationally distributed America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston franchise into digital-first storytelling for online audiences

  • Continued for a second season, moving to PBS Terra with an expanded focus on climate change and the outdoors

  • Distributed across PBS digital platforms, including PBS.org and the PBS app
